To convert this turn-of-the century cooperage into a 70-room boutique hotel, MA sensitively renovated the original brick-and-timber building and expanded the massing with an airy glass addition—designed as a counterpoint to the original structure. To announce the arrival of the new hotel, MA Art provided design services, in collaboration with artist Tom Fruin, to develop the Wythe’s iconic, sculptural HOTEL sign. The monumental, 50-foot-tall marquee is made from colorful, scavenged signage fronted by four-stroke red neon. The found signs—hand-riveted and merged in unexpected ways—were collected from all corners of the city.
