Inspired by a series of cooling towers photographed by Bernd and Hilla Becher, this 310-unit apartment building features a cantilevered glass and aluminum box framed in a Corten steel truss.
Salvaged material, including original signage, bricks, and steel from the derelict building that once occupied the site were incorporated into the lobby, reflecting the history of the V Street corridor. Specifically, to augment the project’s identity, a hand painted sign on the derelict building was carefully dismantled and reassembled as an artistic feature within the new building’s lobby.
The art program developed by MA also includes site-specific artwork by Mattias van Arkel and Nicole Patel.
